Coconut Oil Review For Hair Treatment

 What is Coconut oil?

Coconut oil is an oil extracted from the kernel of a matured coconut meat harvested from a coconut palm. The oil is used for several purposes such as; hair treatment. Coconut oil contains a high saturated fat, it oxidizes slowly and it is last for close to 6months  when it is kept at a room temperature at 24 °C (75 °F).

The use of coconut oil on the hair

It is used as hair conditioner: Coconut oil can be used as a hair conditioner because it contains smaller medium-fatty acids and it is free of scary chemicals that are used in other hair conditioner products. Coconut oil penetrates the hair deeply and faster than any other hair conditioner products.

It is used to cure dandruff: Dandruff can be caused by dry skin and harsh chemicals used to make hair care products.  Coconut oil is a natural oil that helps prevent the scalp from getting dry; it always keeps the hair oily and it also helps in preventing itches. Coconut oil is the best solution for dandruff when you have tried several anti-dandruff products and still haven’t gotten a positive result.

It is used for hair coloring: Coconut oil can be used for mixing natural hair coloring, it gives the natural hair colorings a more vibrant look and prevents it from fading fast.

It is used for faster hair growth: Coconut oil can be used to grow the hair, it helps makes the hair longer and thicker. The oil contains lauric acids and other essential treatment that can penetrate into the hair shaft and help improve the total condition and health of the hair.

It is used to treat lice on the hair: Coconut oil helps prevent lice on the hair. The oil penetrates the scalp and the shaft of the hair, it repels lice and prevents the egg from getting attached to the hair. The prevention of lice is one of the most important uses of coconut oil.

Bonus

Coconut oil has a healing effect on infections, injuries,  and insect bites due anti-microbial qualities.  Use coconut oil over mosquito bites, any bites — it eases the itching and prevents inflammation. Coconut oil rejuvenates skin and provides moisturizing to the skin cell, reducing the appearance of scars.

How to make coconut oil?

  • Split the coconut into half
  • Scrape out the meat of the coconut using a metal spoon
  • Blend the meat with some water
  • Extract the coconut meat
  • Boil the coconut milk and leave it to cool
  • Extract the oil from the milk using a filter or a handkerchief
  • Leave the oil to settle down for a few minutes
  • Separate the pure oil

TWO  factors that need to be considered before using coconut oil

Coconut oil doesn’t work for every type of hair: Coconut oil helps retain the hair natural protein and can be very helpful to those who don’t have enough natural hair protein. Those who have an average shining hair would benefit more from coconut oil; they will have a stronger, longer and a more shining hair. Not everyone with dry hair lacks protein on the hair and as such, using coconut oil could damage the hair.

The quantity also matters: Coconut oil should be used in a very small quantity. A small quantity of coconut oil works faster and better on the hair. When the oil is used in large quantity, it may likely not work effectively.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Hair

After shampooing the hair, use a small amount ( 1/5 Tsp) as a conditioner. Massage with your fingers or use Electric Scalp Massager,

then put on a hair color processing cap or Heat Cap

for 20-30 minutes, then rinse the hair.  You will find your hair soft, shining and bouncing.  If you do the treatment overnight, the effect would be more significant.

Use a small amount on wet hair, have the treatment overnight, wearing a cap, then shampoo your hair in the morning. Doing this procedure once a week will give you hair shiny and healthy look.

I personally use coconut oil for pretty much everything. I use it to make toothpaste, lip balm, and hair moisturizer. The benefits of coconut are numerous. I didn’t know that coconut oil can also be used to treat lice on the hair. I had no idea that you can even make your own coconut oil. If I make my own coconut oil, how long would it be good for? Thank you for sharing !

Yes, it’s especially effective for lice treatment with the combination of anise oil. Coconut oil suffocate lice and loosen bonds as the other oily- based substances and in addition, it has natural antibacterial qualities that help to reduce contamination from microbes. Use of coconut oil preferable over other methods for lice treatment because it provides nutrients to the hair.
Home- made coconut oil can stay fresh longer if stored properly. It usually lasts several months before showing any signs of spoilage.

Coconut oil lasts longer if kept in refrigerator or freezer. However, it’s reasonable enough to store it in a dark place away from direct light. Thanks for the comment!
And as long as the bottle doesn’t have bad smell or mold in it, you can continue use it.

Oh perhaps that’s also the reason why I couldn’t use coconut oil on my hair…I was using too much of it. But then again I can also be one of those cases where it just damages my hair as I don’t need it. I appreciate you mentioned that not everyone can do coconut oil because at the time when I tried it, everyone was raving about it on the internet.
However coconut oil has saved the skin on my legs. A few ago I was sugar waxing and then using an epilator on my legs and I ended up getting scars, lots of ingrown hairs and folliculitis on my legs. I ended up stopping wearing dresses and shorts. Well I did wear them but I would wear them with pantyhose to cover it up which was not only embarrassing but very inconvenient. I thought this was permanent. I went to a dermatologist who prescribed some cream (I think it was salicylic acid) which I used for more than 6 months but I noticed the biggest difference when I started shaving with coconut oil and moisturizing my legs with coconut oil (it was the around the same time I used in my hair but it didn’t work for me). I swear to God one year later the scars and folliculitis was gone. My legs looks like I never had these problems. The dermatologist told me to stop using creams and shaving creams but he never mentioned about the healing effects of coconut oil which is too bad because others who have similar problems can greatly benefit from this.
